Biological Mechanisms of Heat Acclimatization

How the human body reconstructs its cardiovascular and glandular systems under daily heat exposure.

Phase 1: Plasma Expansion (Days 1–5)

Aldosterone and vasopressin trigger renal sodium/water retention, expanding blood plasma volume by 10–15%. This expands stroke volume, stabilizing cardiac output and lowering exertion heart rate by 15–30 bpm.

Phase 2: Sweat Gland Remodeling (Days 5–10)

Sweat glands increase maximal secretory capacity (up to ~2.0 L/hr) and activate at a lower hypothalamic core temperature threshold (~37.1°C vs 37.6°C). Glands reabsorb sodium, reducing sweat salt loss by up to 50%.

Thermodynamic Limits ($T_{wb}$ Ceiling)

No amount of acclimatization can bypass the laws of physics. When the ambient wet-bulb temperature reaches 31°C–35°C (100% relative humidity at skin temp ~35°C), the vapor pressure gradient drops to zero and sweat cannot evaporate.
