0 Shots TakenThe Science of the Shootout
In NHL regular season overtimes and shootouts, shooters have less than two seconds to read the goaltender’s depth, exploit opening pockets, and elevate the puck before the butterfly seals the ice.
This simulator models real regulation net dimensions (6 ft wide by 4 ft high), realistic puck travel physics with arc elevation, and dynamic goaltender limb collision checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the goaltender AI decide its save motion?
The virtual goalie tracks puck trajectory in real time. If the shot is directed low, it drops into a butterfly position with flared pads. If the shot is elevated, it activates the trapper (glove) or blocker based on shot lateral placement.
What makes a shot hit the post or crossbar?
Regulation posts are exactly 2 inches in diameter. When horizontal aim lands near ±3.0 ft or elevation strikes between 3.9 ft and 4.1 ft, the puck clips the red iron with a metallic ping sound and ricochets away.
Does release speed affect accuracy?
Yes. Slapshots clocked above 95 mph compress the goalie’s reaction window down to 350 milliseconds, making high corners harder to defend, but require tighter calibration to avoid sailing high into the safety netting.
