Why Subtractive Pigment Mixing Differs From Standard Screen Hex Math Click to expand color science ↓

Subtractive (Physical Pigments)

When oil paints, watercolours, or inks blend, pigments act as physical wavelength filters. Blue absorbs red and yellow light; yellow absorbs blue light. The only light both pigments reflect back to your eyes is green. Ordinary RGB averaging turns yellow and blue into dark muddy gray; our subtractive engine computes true spectral absorption.

Perceptual Oklab Space

Created by Björn Ottosson in 2020, Oklab models human visual perception with mathematical uniformity. Blending in Oklab prevents the "hue shift" and "muddy gray zone" common in naive RGB interpolation, creating clean, predictable gradient ramps with consistent perceived brightness.

Additive (Screen RGB Light)

Additive color occurs when colored light emitters overlap directly on an OLED or LCD display. Red light combined with green light stimulates cone photoreceptors to produce yellow light. Mixing all three primary screen lights at peak intensity produces pure white (#FFFFFF).
