Official MLB Rule 5.09(b)(1) Mechanics

While a runner may physically avoid a fielder's sweep tag through airborne jump trajectory or lateral clearance, no run scores unless home plate is touched.

Rule 5.09(b)(1) & (2) Key Enforcement:
1. Tag Avoidance: A runner's base path is established when the tag attempt occurs. Departing more than 3 ft from that path to avoid a tag results in an out.
2. Abandonment / Missed Plate: Evading a tag completely without touching home plate leaves the runner safe temporarily. However, if the runner leaves the dirt circle or enters the dugout without retouching home, they are declared OUT upon entering dead territory.
