NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Waiver Mechanics
48-Hour Waiver Period & Claims
When an NBA team waives a guaranteed contract, all 29 other teams have a 48-hour window to submit a waiver claim. If claimed, the new team assumes the entire remaining contract and the waiving team takes zero dead cap hit. If unclaimed, the player clears waivers and becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The Stretch Provision Formula
Under CBA Article VII, Section 7(e), if a team waives an unclaimed player before Sept 1, the remaining guaranteed salary across future seasons is stretched evenly over (2 × Remaining Seasons + 1) years. For example, a 2-year remaining deal is stretched over 5 seasons, reducing immediate single-year cap pressure.
First & Second Apron Hard Caps
The 2023-2030 CBA introduces severe punitive tiers: crossing the First Apron ($178.1M) hard caps sign-and-trades and salary aggregation; crossing the Second Apron ($188.9M) eliminates the Mid-Level Exception, freezes future first-round draft picks, and forbids cash in trades.
Rookie Scale Lottery Guarantee
Lottery draft picks (like No. 8 overall Rob Dillingham) possess guaranteed multi-year rookie scale contracts ($6.26M in Year 1). Waiving a top-10 pick without a claim creates immediate dead money that constrains free agent flexibility unless stretched.
