Headline Decoder: Mathematical Floor vs Reality
Metric / Perspective Rate Formula & Underlying Reality
"At Least 1 in 4" (Floor) 25.3% 215 / 850
Assumes 0 of 615 untested players had brain trauma. Strictly a math lower bound.
Observed Sample Rate 91.5% 215 / 235
Direct pathology rate among families who submitted deceased players' brains.
Interactive Model 59.4% (215 + 289) / 850
Dynamic estimate adjusting for volunteer donation selection bias.
Estimated Theoretical Ceiling 97.7% (215 + 615) / 850
Assuming all untested players had CTE (minus the 20 confirmed negatives).
Why Selection Bias Exists: Brain banks rely on post-mortem organ donation. Families who witnessed cognitive decline, depression, or behavioral shifts are far more likely to donate, causing the 91.5% sample rate to potentially overestimate the full cohort. However, even if only 1 out of every 3 untested players had CTE, overall pro prevalence exceeds 49%.
Cumulative Subconcussive Impacts by Career Stage Data: Boston University CTE Center & Daneshvar et al.
Youth (Ages 7–13)
~1,500 – 2,500
Repetitive subconcussive head impacts during rapid neural development. Oklahoma drills & early helmet contact.
High School (Ages 14–18)
~4,000 – 6,000
Higher collision velocities (impact force scales with mass & speed²). Equipment wear & lack of athletic trainers.
College / NCAA D1 (4 Yrs)
~4,500 – 7,000
Elite rotational acceleration. 80%+ of CTE risk accumulates before playing a single pro snap.
NFL Pro Career (Avg 3.3 Yrs)
~3,000 – 5,000+
Peak impact energy. Total lifetime cumulative head impacts routinely surpass 14,000 hits for NFL veterans.
