King Harald V succeeded his father Olav V on 17 January 1991. A beloved constitutional monarch, he championed social inclusivity, modern Norwegian pluralism, and represented Norway at three Olympic Sailing Games (1964 Tokyo, 1968 Mexico City, 1972 Munich). He famously persevered through a nine-year courtship to marry commoner Sonja Haraldsen in 1968.
