๐ฌ What's Really Happening?
When a hydrogenโoxygen rocket engine fires, the combustion produces water vapor (HโO) as a primary exhaust product. That vapor can condense in the cold upper atmosphere, forming a visible white cloud โ much like your breath on a cold day.
A single Space Shuttle solid rocket booster produced about 300 tons of water vapor per launch. That sounds like a lot โ but compared to a typical thunderstorm, which moves 100,000+ tons of water, it's minuscule.
๐ง Does NASA Control the Weather?
Short answer: No.
Weather systems operate on a staggering scale. A single hurricane releases the energy of 10,000 nuclear bombs per second. Rocket plumes are tiny, short-lived, and cannot trigger or control storms. The claim that NASA "makes it rain on command" confuses a visible exhaust trail with genuine weather modification โ which requires continent-scale energy and complex seeding techniques, not a rocket engine.
The quote attributed to Lyndon B. Johnson about controlling weather is often taken out of context. While weather modification research exists (cloud seeding, etc.), rocket launches are not a tool for that purpose.
