When high winds, low visibility, or coastal runway flooding exceed safe landing maximums, the FAA Command Center issues a Ground Stop, halting inbound aircraft at their origin gates. When throughput is simply reduced, a GDP meters inbound flights with Assigned Departure Times (EDCTs).
Aircraft scheduled to fly between unaffected cities (such as Denver to Phoenix) often get canceled because the plane was stranded in Boston or JFK six hours earlier. This tool calculates both direct storm intersection and rotational equipment risk.
Rather than waiting in line at the airport counter after a cancellation text, proactive flyers use travel waivers immediately to route through southern hubs (ATL, CLT, DFW) or switch to inland train corridors (Amtrak Northeast Regional / Acela) before seats evaporate.
