Give each frame
its time.

A board shows the idea. Timing reveals how that idea unfolds. Choose the workspace for your actual handoff, then test a sequence with your own frames.

What happens after
the frames are arranged?

Choose Boords when frame review and a timed animatic are central, Canva for a designed visual board, Storyflow for a freeform planning canvas, or StudioBinder when script scenes and production documents drive the workflow. These are editorial recommendations grounded in official sources retrieved October 5, 2026. No paid account trial, speed benchmark or invented rating is used.

Boords

Frames, review and timed playback.

Its animatic tool provides adjustable frame lengths, audio upload, waveform alignment, looping and notes over playback. Audio sets the overall duration; without audio, you can set the duration manually. Sharing links support guest viewing and frame comments without a Boords account, with configurable version visibility and permissions. Animatic documentation; current sharing controls.

Choose it when the storyboard and pacing preview are deliverables that a reviewer needs to discuss frame by frame. Its editor supports drawing, imported images, text, shapes and camera movement overlays. Separate versioning lets you retain prior iterations rather than overwriting the discussion. Frame editor; versions and statuses.

Handoff: PDF, editable text, spreadsheets, image archives and timed MP4 are documented export routes. MP4 includes timing and added audio; animatics and image archives are processed in the background with an email download notification. Google Slides export produces presentation-ready images, rather than an editable native Slides project. Export formats.

Check before choosing: guest display permissions, access controls and actual plan availability. A status label or an opened link should never be mistaken for authenticated client approval.

Canva

An approachable visual layout.

Canva’s storyboard creator offers editable templates, your own uploaded images, text and illustrations, with real-time team collaboration. It describes a storyboard as images for shots or scenes plus their action and spoken context. Official storyboard workflow.

Choose it when the immediate task is a clear visual pitch or a printable board and your team already works in Canva. Establish your own consistent scene identifiers, action and dialogue fields. A designed panel layout alone does not establish shot dependencies or production readiness.

Handoff: the current download documentation distinguishes JPG/PNG, PDF, GIF and MP4. PPTX is available for presentations, and animations or embedded video may not carry into PowerPoint. A cropped image can still be recoverable in a downloaded PDF, so remove content that should not be shared before exporting. Current format and PDF guidance.

Check before choosing: whether you need a static board or a separately timed video design, who can access the actual shared project and which assets or export options are included in your account. The free storyboard creator does not imply every library asset or export setting is free.

Storyflow

The sequence beside its context.

The dedicated storyboard page describes a freeform canvas with reference images, clips, narration, notes, AI-created structure, shared view-only links and PDF export. It also describes a pen tool for rough sketches. Current storyboard page.

Choose it when the storyboard belongs beside research, reference media and the broader plan. Review generated structure and retain the script’s real scene identifiers; a generated board does not prove continuity, feasibility or ownership of its images.

Source disagreement: its September 18 comparison says there are no storyboard drawing tools, while the dedicated page retrieved October 5 explicitly describes a pen tool. We have not tested a signed-in account. Confirm the current drawing workflow if it matters to your purchase. The comparison separately says presentation mode steps through frames without timed playback; that is not an audio animatic. Dated vendor comparison.

Availability: standalone early access is paid-only today; invited collaboration is free now. A standalone Free plan is announced for before the end of 2026. This explicit current availability takes precedence over a generic “start free” footer. Current availability statement. No signup test was performed.

StudioBinder

A board connected to script scenes.

The current script-to-storyboard workflow imports a screenplay, prompts you to check scene numbers, then lets you inspect detected scenes before import. Documented formats include FDX, PDF, TXT and Fountain. July 2026 import guidance.

Choose it when scene identity and the wider production workflow matter more than an isolated layout. Its storyboard product page documents shot tags, aspect ratios, imported images, image annotation, grouping and team collaboration. Official film storyboard workflow.

Handoff: PDF export lets you select scenes, customize the grid and layout, then download the actual board. Validate that the detected scene list and selected export scenes match your intended version. July 2026 PDF guidance.

Check before choosing: your real imported script, shot fields and recipient access. The retrieved import and PDF documents do not establish an audio-synchronized animatic export; use a documented timing workflow when that deliverable is required.

Keep the frame,
the timing and the intention.

Make the sequence identifiable.

Give each panel a stable identifier, scene, action and dialogue. A moved panel should keep its notes. Record unresolved coverage questions before you turn the board into a shooting handoff.

Use timing to ask a concrete question.

Does the audience have time to read the reveal? Does the reaction need longer? Enter your own durations and watch the actual images in order. A silent preview cannot establish voiceover fit; review the real audio in an audio-capable editor.

Export the evidence and the editable state.

Send a preview for pacing, and keep a backup containing the original normalized images and every note. A compressed animation is useful for a quick look; it is not the full editable production record.

A product reveal that needs room

Hold the actual reveal frame longer, then watch the silent sequence. Ask whether the visual explanation reads without adding a fictional effectiveness score.

Original planning examples, not customer testimonials.

Your frames.
A real timed preview.

Upload PNG, JPEG or WebP panels, set their duration in seconds and reorder them. Preview the actual images, then encode a silent GIF using the pinned gifenc 1.0.3 library. JSON retains full normalized PNG images and notes; Markdown retains the complete written handoff.

Add your frames or load the explicitly fictional example.

Silent, cut-only playback. GIF has at most 256 palette colors per frame and no audio; photographs may lose detail. Every panel needs an uploaded or demo image for GIF export. Images fit inside the chosen dimensions with a dark letterbox, without cropping. GIF stores hundredths of a second: effective durations are rounded to the nearest 0.01 second and must be 0.02–655.35 seconds, within the format and common player limits. Preview uses those same effective durations. The timing summary discloses each requested and effective duration. Notes remain complete in JSON/Markdown and the live caption; they are not burned into the GIF. Browser memory limits large boards. Save JSON before leaving; there is no automatic storage or server upload.

Decide from the actual handoff.

Which tool is best for a timed client animatic?

Boords has a documented frame timeline, audio workflow and MP4 export. Choose it when those are central requirements. The local utility here is a silent GIF timing sketch from your own stills; it does not replace an audio-capable animatic editor.

Can I use a static storyboard as a production record?

Keep stable scene and shot identifiers, action, dialogue, unresolved questions, source references and the actual reviewed version. A PDF preserves a snapshot, while a shared board may change. Keep both the agreed record and an editable backup when the production needs them.

Does this tool generate frames or infer the right timing?

No. You provide the images, notes and durations. The canvas displays the real images, and gifenc encodes their actual pixels and effective timing. There is no AI inference, voiceover alignment, authenticated approval or automatic production schedule.

What survives a backup and restore?

JSON includes all panels, their stable identifiers, complete action/dialogue/notes/source text, durations, normalized PNG pixels and output dimensions. Restore validates the full candidate and decodes its images before replacing the current board. GIF and Markdown are separate handoff formats.
