Beating Red Zone Coverages
When sweating out a final drive on Sunday, defensive coordinators tighten coverage windows dramatically inside the 10-yard line.
- Cover 2: Safeties protect the pylons. The vulnerability is the high-hole between the hash marks behind the linebackers or a quick slant in front of the boundary corner.
- Cover 3: Three deep thirds leave the flats and wheel routes vulnerable, but defend against jump-ball fades.
- Cover 1 Blitz: Single safety with zero help. Receivers must win 1-on-1 on quick slants or out-breaking rub routes before the 4-man pressure arrives.
