About the Penn & Stein Analysis
In their Wall Street Journal commentary "Socialism and the Dumbest Generation," pollster Mark Penn and former NYC Council President Andrew Stein point out that while self-described democratic socialist sentiment polls high among college-age Americans in abstract surveys, the sentiment dissolves when respondents are asked about typical mechanisms required to implement such policies: higher tax brackets extending into modest earners, government-rationed service queues, and limits on private enterprise choice.
This simulator lets researchers, students, and citizens examine the spread between broad thematic appeal and specific policy implementation realities across education, employment guarantees, healthcare, and housing.
