Brand guidelines & creative handoffs

Make your brand
easier to use.

A guideline is useful when another person can make the right decision with it. Choose the publishing platform, then prepare an explicit color handoff with real values and contrast results.

A home for rules.
A path to the right asset.

Official evidence checked October 5, 2026. Platform fit below is an editorial judgment, not a commercial hands-on benchmark. Verify the current plan, permissions and actual publishing workflow with the vendor.

Our practical shortlist: Frontify when guidelines should sit with a wider brand-management system; zeroheight when brand documentation connects to design files and product-system documentation; Brandfolder Brandguide when you want guidelines alongside an existing Brandfolder asset workflow. Test who can find, use and update one real guideline before deciding.

Frontify

Guidelines within a brand system

Frontify's current overview describes a platform combining DAM, guidelines, templates and portals, with customizable guideline content blocks for areas such as logos, colors and messaging. That supports considering it for a connected brand-management workflow. It does not independently prove rollout speed, governance quality or any promised savings.

zeroheight

Brand documentation + design files

The current brand-documentation guide describes connected color styles, typography styles, export-ready design assets and rules blocks. It also documents access options that depend on the plan. Consider it when the source design file and the written usage guidance need to stay connected; confirm sync and viewer access on the exact plan.

Brandfolder Brandguide

Guidelines alongside asset management

Brandfolder's current product page describes editable digital guidelines; Smartsheet's current help center identifies Brandguide as a way to create guides for using brand assets. It is a candidate when your team already manages assets in Brandfolder. The retrieved overview does not establish every editor, permission or integration capability; demonstrate those in your own trial.

Color values
with useful rules.

Prepare named color tokens and check one text/background pair. Color.js 0.5.2 performs actual parsing, conversion and WCAG 2 contrast calculation. Matching CSS, JSON, SVG and PNG exports make the handoff portable.

Apply the illustrative demo or edit your own colors.

Make the next decision clear.

Body text uses the selected foreground and background.

Apply a valid palette to calculate contrast.

This check concerns opaque sRGB text colors under WCAG 2, not complete accessibility compliance, logo quality, print matching or trademark review. AA normal text requires at least 4.5:1; large text has a 3:1 threshold and must meet the actual large-text definition. Classification uses the unrounded value. The displayed ratio is rounded for readability. W3C contrast guidance · Color.js contrast API.

Token names use letters, digits and hyphens, beginning with a letter. Duplicate names and transparent colors are rejected. CSS colors are converted and gamut-mapped to opaque sRGB for these web exports; the actual exported hex is shown beside the entered value. This is not Pantone or CMYK matching. No text is uploaded or saved across reloads. Export JSON before leaving; reset clears your edits. Invalid edits block exports until applied successfully.

Give people
the next decision.

A hex code is a value. A guideline says where it belongs, what to avoid and who can change it.

Name the role, not just the color

Distinguish body text, background, emphasis and disabled states in your actual interface. A token called accent is not automatically suitable for small text. Test the real pairing and do not infer accessibility from the palette alone.

Keep source and export explicit

Wide-gamut input can change when mapped to sRGB. Document the entered value and the exported one, along with its usage note. Treat print specifications as a separate deliverable that needs an appropriate color workflow.

Show the rule in context

Use examples that let someone reproduce a real task: choose a body-text pairing, find a logo asset, or write a heading in the intended voice. This color handoff is only one part of a complete guideline, not an automatic brand strategy.

Assign an owner and change process

Agree who approves changes and where the source of truth lives. A polished exported board will become stale if it is detached from the maintained rule. This tool does not publish to a vendor or synchronize a design file.

Clarity before completeness.

Can I use this instead of a guideline platform?

It creates a portable color handoff, not a hosted access-controlled documentation system or asset manager. Use it to prepare one useful part of your guide before choosing where the whole system belongs.

Does a contrast pass mean the brand is accessible?

No. It checks one opaque text/background pair only. Actual typography, focus states, component boundaries, imagery, interaction and other requirements need separate review.

Why can the exported color differ?

The tool maps input into sRGB so the exported hex and preview agree. Wide-gamut colors may change; entered and mapped values are retained in JSON. Do not treat the export as a print specification.
