Make equality visible

Solving a linear equation means keeping both sides equal while isolating the unknown. Set up an equation, try a value of x and inspect each side. Reveal the worked explanation when you want to compare your reasoning with the algebra.

Linear equation balance lab

Solving a linear equation means keeping both sides equal while isolating the unknown. Set up an equation, try a value of x and inspect each side. Reveal the worked explanation when you want to compare your reasoning with the algebra.

The lab uses equations of the form a×x + b = c. The graph and values respond to your inputs; no photograph is uploaded and no general homework-solving service is called.

Inputs are processed in this page. Nothing is submitted to the app or a business. Download a result to keep it; this page does not automatically save your work.

A workflow you can use

Read the equation as a balance

Explain what each side represents before rearranging anything. The equals sign says the two expressions have the same value.

Test a candidate value

Substitute your guess and calculate both sides. A mismatch gives you evidence to adjust the guess, not a reason to rewrite the equation.

Undo the addition

Subtract the same b from both sides. Write that operation explicitly so the equality stays visible.

Undo multiplication and check

When a is nonzero, divide both sides by a. Substitute the result into the original equation to verify it, not merely into the last line of your work.

Put the idea into practice

What to keep in mind

This browser lab is an independent educational companion, not the app's protected student workflow. It deliberately offers an optional explanation and does not authenticate a parent or enforce the app's solution restrictions.

Learn why both sides must stay equal

A linear equation lab lets you test the idea behind the symbols. Change one coefficient at a time, try a value and explain why an operation must affect both sides.

Choose based on the learning interaction, then check whether you can solve a similar problem without the tool. An explanation is useful when it helps you learn a method rather than simply produce an answer.
