Welles Remy Crowther (May 17, 1977 – September 11, 2001) grew up in Nyack, New York. At age 16, he became an apprentice volunteer firefighter. When he enrolled at Boston College, he wore jersey #19 on the men's varsity lacrosse team, always carrying an ordinary red bandanna in his helmet or pocket.
On the morning of 9/11, Welles was on the 104th floor of Two World Trade Center. After the impact of United Airlines Flight 175, Welles made multiple ascents and descents through debris, smoke, and stairwells, leading survivors to the Skylobby and safety. Eyewitness survivors later recounted being guided by a courageous young man wearing a red bandanna over his face. He is officially credited with saving at least ten people, though estimates reach up to 18.
Boston College immortalized his legacy in 2014 by instituting the annual Red Bandanna Game. Every student, player, and fan waves bandannas, while the Eagles wear uniforms lined with red paisley trim.
