Growing up in Upper Nyack, NY, Welles Crowther was given a red bandanna by his father Jefferson Crowther before church. He carried it in his pocket everywhere, later using it under his gear as a junior volunteer firefighter with Empire Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 at age 16.
◆ Boston College Lacrosse Career (#19 Midfield)
Welles attended Boston College (Class of 1999), majoring in economics while starring as a tenacious midfielder for the Eagles Men's Lacrosse squad under coach Ed Moylan.

Wore Jersey #19; renowned for grit, ground balls, transition defense, and tucking his trademark red bandanna underneath his lacrosse helmet every single game.
The Red Bandanna Game
Every autumn since 2014, Boston College athletic teams don signature red bandanna patterned uniforms and cleats to celebrate Crowther's selfless character and leadership.
Posthumous FDNY Honor
In 2006, Welles was named an Honorary New York City Firefighter by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, honoring his heroism alongside first responders in the South Tower.
