Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) Operational Concepts

Modern defensive combat air patrol (CAP) missions against stand-off drone and cruise missile salvos require prolonged defensive counter-air (DCA) endurance. An unrefueled multi-role fighter (e.g. Typhoon or F-15) typically exhausts internal combat fuel within 75 to 90 minutes of loiter.

By establishing an Anchor Orbit or Track Rendezvous protected behind forward surface-to-air missile (SAM) umbrellas, heavy multi-role tankers (such as the RAF Voyager / KC-30A MRTT) extend tactical on-station time by 300% to 500%, enabling continuous 24/7 airspace coverage.

Standard NATO / Coalition AAR Terminology

ARIP (Air Refueling Initial Point): The geographical waypoint where the receiver aircraft enters the refueling corridor and initiates radar/Tacan electronic rendezvous with the tanker.

ARCP (Air Refueling Control Point): The planned geometric point over which the tanker and receiver achieve physical contact and begin fuel transfer.

Bingo Fuel: The minimum fuel state required for an aircraft to safely disengage from combat air patrol, execute transit back to the primary recovery airfield, and arrive with mandated IFR diversion reserves.

Joker Fuel: A pre-briefed fuel state above Bingo at which tactical controllers initiate tanker coordination or plan station turnover to relieving flights.
