Find the right tool.
See the keyword gaps.

Choose Semrush for comparing organic and paid keyword profiles, Ahrefs for a focused content-gap workflow, or SpyFu for exploring shared SEO and PPC keywords. Start with the research question, then check the plan’s actual access and limits.

Diagram connecting competitor keyword sets to overlap and missing keyword shortlists

Three tools, different research paths

This shortlist compares documented workflows, not independently measured index quality. There is no universal winner. None of these tools can prove a competitor’s actual revenue from a keyword.

Semrush

Keyword Gap compares keyword profiles side by side, with organic, paid and PLA keyword modes. Its overlap filters help distinguish shared keywords from missing opportunities.

Consider it when: the same team needs to investigate both search content and advertising gaps.

Check before buying: report limits, historical access, the relevant toolkit and database coverage for your country.

Ahrefs

Content Gap in Competitive Analysis finds keywords competitors rank for while the target site does not. The official workflow uses competing websites and adjustable filters to refine the list.

Consider it when: your immediate job is building a content research shortlist.

Check before buying: available reports, exports and usage limits in your selected subscription.

Official Content Gap walkthrough

SpyFu

Kombat divides SEO or PPC keyword sets into shared and distinct groups. Its interface helps explore keywords held by multiple competitors and gaps relative to your own domain.

Consider it when: keyword intersections are the central question in your search campaign.

Check before buying: target-market coverage, historical depth and export access for your actual account.

Official Kombat explanation

Capabilities checked against these official help pages. Prices and plan entitlements are intentionally not quoted; confirm them directly. Recommendations are editorial judgments from the documented workflow, not hands-on vendor benchmarks.

Turn a keyword export into a gap list

Paste or upload a UTF-8 CSV with columns domain, keyword, position. PapaParse reads the CSV locally. Positions are integers from 1–100. This tool compares your supplied rows; it does not crawl Google, estimate traffic or call a vendor API.

Changing settings marks results stale until you analyze again. An absent row means absent from this sample, not proven absent from Google.

Evidence before opportunity

A missing keyword is a research lead. It is not a command to publish another page.

Compare a consistent slice

Export the same country, device, search channel and collection date wherever possible. Do not mix paid and organic rows into one shortlist without labeling them. Vendor datasets and update timing differ; disagreement is expected.

Verify the search result

Inspect the actual result page for the candidate. Does it answer a commercial, informational or navigational question? A competitor’s branded query may have little relevance to your product. Check your own Search Console impressions before deciding that your site has no visibility.

Choose the next action

Keep a query only if your business can provide an original useful answer. Link it to an existing page, a needed update or a genuinely new task. Record the source and collection date in the downloaded brief before handing it to a writer.

Understand the math

Each domain–keyword pair keeps its best supplied position. A domain qualifies at or above the chosen visibility threshold (position ≤ maximum). A gap has at least the chosen number of qualifying competitors and no qualifying own-domain row. “Outside cutoff” differs from “absent in sample.” Keywords are trimmed and compared case-insensitively; domains are lowercased with a leading www. removed. Duplicate rows are consolidated. No hidden weights or threat scores are applied.

Questions worth asking first

Can I use my own export?

Yes. Map your vendor export to the three required headers. Extra columns are ignored. Blank fields, malformed CSV and positions outside 1–100 block analysis. CSV formula-like values are neutralized in downloaded CSV.

Is the data uploaded?

No. CSV parsing and set comparison run in this browser. Navigation and font loading make ordinary web requests. Closing or reloading the tab clears this tool’s input; it does not persist your rows.

Does a gap guarantee traffic?

No. The output contains sample intersections, not traffic forecasts, ranking promises or conversion estimates. Validate intent, usefulness and your ability to compete before investing in a page.

Repeat the research with a clear question

Use the exported brief to document market, date and channel, then add evidence from the actual result pages. Keep the comparison useful for your team rather than trying to collect every possible metric.
