A blank is not a different trait

A comparison becomes misleading when an unobserved feature is treated as if it were absent. Record missing evidence explicitly before reasoning about how two specimens differ.

Put it into practice

Write what you actually observed

A photographed underside is evidence about the visible structure. 'Not photographed' is evidence about your record, not a statement that the structure does not exist.

Keep the uncertainty in the row

Leave a field blank or describe why it is unknown. The worksheet marks empty fields as incomplete; it cannot infer whether an apparent text difference reflects a genuine biological difference.

Inspect the original photographs and any notes about the observation. If a relevant feature is not recorded, gather appropriate evidence only if it is safe and permitted, or ask a qualified local expert. A model's confident label cannot supply a missing observation.

A worked example

One row says 'stem base visible' and the other says 'base obscured'. That is a difference in what you recorded. It does not establish that the two organisms have different bases.

Side-by-side plant and fungi observation evidence worksheet

Similar-looking specimens deserve separate records. Put the visible features of two observations side by side to see which details differ and which are still missing. The tool compares your entered wording; it does not name a species or determine whether either specimen is safe.

Identical text is not proof of identical biology. Different text can reflect lighting, wording or incomplete observation. The worksheet preserves uncertainty and does not produce an identification confidence score or an edibility assessment.

What to keep in mind

This notebook cannot identify a species or establish whether anything is safe to eat. Do not rely on a photograph, app or exported note to decide edibility. Avoid disturbing specimens or disclosing sensitive locations.

Fieldmark's listing describes confidence bands, genus-level fallback and guided questions for plant and fungi identification. It says the app does not certify edibility and highlights dangerous lookalikes.
