Compare the observations first

Similar-looking specimens deserve separate records. Put the visible features of two observations side by side to see which details differ and which are still missing. The tool compares your entered wording; it does not name a species or determine whether either specimen is safe.

Put it into practice

Use specific observation labels

Give each specimen a label that you can connect to its actual photographs. Avoid treating a tentative species name as an established identity.

Separate each visible feature

Record habitat, scale and relevant structures in separate rows. Mark absent evidence as missing rather than filling it with an assumption.

Review the photographs and seek appropriate expertise

The comparison can help formulate a question for an identifier, but the textual difference is not an answer. Do not use this worksheet to make a consumption decision.

A worked example

Two cap photographs may look alike while one record says gills were visible and the other says the underside was not photographed. That difference describes documentation, not a taxonomic conclusion.

Side-by-side plant and fungi observation evidence worksheet

Similar-looking specimens deserve separate records. Put the visible features of two observations side by side to see which details differ and which are still missing. The tool compares your entered wording; it does not name a species or determine whether either specimen is safe.

Identical text is not proof of identical biology. Different text can reflect lighting, wording or incomplete observation. The worksheet preserves uncertainty and does not produce an identification confidence score or an edibility assessment.

What to keep in mind

This notebook cannot identify a species or establish whether anything is safe to eat. Do not rely on a photograph, app or exported note to decide edibility. Avoid disturbing specimens or disclosing sensitive locations.

Fieldmark's listing describes confidence bands, genus-level fallback and guided questions for plant and fungi identification. It says the app does not certify edibility and highlights dangerous lookalikes.
