Integrity is a file-level question

A checksum can answer whether file bytes match a known reference. It cannot establish the source, truth or legal significance of the document by itself.

Put it into practice

Keep the reference you trust

A new manifest is only a record of the files you selected at that moment. Its value for later integrity comparison depends on retaining that reference appropriately. Generating it does not independently authenticate the selected files.

Interpret matching and different hashes

A matching SHA-256 value is evidence of matching bytes for practical file-integrity use. A changed value indicates different bytes, which may result from a rescan, export settings, metadata or a genuine content change. Inspect the actual files to understand the difference.

Use the right evidence for the claim

Neither a matching hash nor a tidy CSV establishes that a record satisfies VA's evidence requirements. Use official instructions and accredited help for that question. This browser tool is a file-management companion rather than a claims determination service.

A worked example

A PDF saved again by an editor can receive a new checksum while its visible text remains similar. The changed hash is a cue to inspect the copy, not proof that someone falsified the record.

Local document file inventory and SHA-256 integrity manifest

When several copies of a document exist, file names alone may not show whether their bytes match. Select local files to create a manifest of names, sizes, file timestamps and SHA-256 checksums. The browser reads them locally and exports a CSV without uploading their contents.

A checksum identifies file bytes, not whether a document is authentic, complete or sufficient evidence for a claim. File metadata timestamps are not issue dates. This tool does not parse medical content, fill a VA form, determine eligibility or submit anything.

What to keep in mind

The organizer is educational preparation, not representation, a benefits determination or legal advice. VA says accredited Veterans Service Organization representatives help with benefit claims for free. Use official VA instructions and qualified help for your situation.
