Do not let metadata rewrite a date

A downloaded or copied document can have file metadata that differs from the date printed on it. Keep those concepts separate when preparing a record inventory.

Put it into practice

Read the timestamp label literally

The manifest displays the file's last-modified metadata in ISO format. That value is supplied by the selected file, not extracted from its pages. Copying, editing or downloading can affect the metadata you see.

Record document dates elsewhere

For an appointment or evidence checklist, refer to the actual date shown on the document or correspondence. The manifest does not inspect the contents and cannot choose the legally relevant event or filing deadline.

Keep source correspondence accessible

When a date matters to your situation, retain the actual letter or official confirmation and ask an accredited representative about the appropriate next step. Do not infer a deadline from the date column of a file inventory.

A worked example

A letter issued in September can appear with an October file timestamp after download. Neither the CSV's creation date nor that metadata changes the date printed on the letter.

Local document file inventory and SHA-256 integrity manifest

When several copies of a document exist, file names alone may not show whether their bytes match. Select local files to create a manifest of names, sizes, file timestamps and SHA-256 checksums. The browser reads them locally and exports a CSV without uploading their contents.

A checksum identifies file bytes, not whether a document is authentic, complete or sufficient evidence for a claim. File metadata timestamps are not issue dates. This tool does not parse medical content, fill a VA form, determine eligibility or submit anything.

Inputs are processed in this page. Nothing is submitted to the app or a business. Download a result to keep it; this page does not automatically save your work.

What to keep in mind

The organizer is educational preparation, not representation, a benefits determination or legal advice. VA says accredited Veterans Service Organization representatives help with benefit claims for free. Use official VA instructions and qualified help for your situation.
